The munificence of Thackersey made it possible to have a separate college of Home Science. It started with a modest enrollment of 23 students and a few dedicated teachers who worked under the guidance of expert home scientist from India and the United States of America.
Under the Technical Co-operation Mission and the Government of India, the College received equipments for laboratories, books on the subjects, technical assistance through American experts and foreign training for its Home Science teachers. |
With the rapid expansion of the college in the University premises at Churchgate, the college was shifted in 1977 to the spacious 21 acre campus of the University at Juhu. The impressive building boasts of large, airy, well furnished classrooms, laboratories equipped with the most modern apparatus / equipments, a modern and sophisticated computer centre, a good library and a Students’ Hostel, the spacious ground of the campus for sports and other extra-curricular activities. Our enrollment today has reached beyond 800.
The composite departments of the main discipline, namely those of Foods and Nutrition, Mass Communication and Extension, Human Development, Family Resource Management, Textile and Clothing Apparel Designing and Composite Home Science, grew over the years to offer specialization to students at the Degree level in each of the areas. As the need for family living changed, the Home Science programme changed. In 1995 and again in 2007 syllabus was restructured to update the Home Science programme and make it more job relevant by offering more intensive specializations at the undergraduate level. The specialization courses along with computer application in their area of specialization and internship are designed to equip the students with the academic knowledge and practical skills necessary for a career in their area of specializations. Strong links with the industry and other institutions / agencies ensure that the courses will always be relevant to the vocational needs. Each and every graduate of S.V.T. is not only professional and computer literate, but also is a woman aware of women’s rights and empowered to deal with issues concerning today’s woman.
The students of Sir Vithaldas Thackersey have shown their acumen not only in the academic field but in variegated co-curricular activities such as Elocution, Drama Music, Dance, Sports, Athletic, N.S.S. programmes and have proved their mettle at Inter University, State and National level competitions. The most accurate marker of the success of an academic institution is its alumnae. Today, the SVT graduates scattered all over the world are engaged in not only home making, but are also employed in a variety of occupations ranging from research and teaching to top executive positions in national organizations, hospitality services, community projects related to health and nutrition women and children, interior decoration, communication and media services, child care centres etc. and many are successful entrepreneurs. |
